For my second blog post of the semester, I would like to talk about the deputy who was killed over by Three Forks last week. Mason Moore was ambushed and killed during a routine traffic stop early last Tuesday morning. The Billings Gazette has released several articles on the story, and the one I will be critiquing can be found here. The article is simply an update on the story, created when additional information was released to the public on the deputy’s ambush. The article relays how the deputy was shot once, then the suspects made a u-turn and shot the deputy more than 15 more times. The suspects then led authorities on a high-speed chase all the way to Rock Creek near Missoula. Along the way, the suspects fired on law enforcement vehicles, disabling 2 vehicles. The vehicle finally came to a rest near Rock Creek, having run over spike strips a number of miles ago. The suspects then exited the vehicle, firing at law enforcement with a long gun and a handgun. Authorities shot one suspect in the head and the other in the hand. The first suspect died of his wounds and the second has been detained.
The article is formatted in a very factual way. It relays all pertinent information about the story, with no personal opinion inserted. There is no bias in the article, but I’m sure it is not hard for a reader to form an opinion. This article is part of a “series” so to speak. The news service keeps releasing updated articles on the situation.
